Standard Registration Plate Sizes

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am new to you forum and am not sure how to post this question I have. Would you please advise me where to post this on your forum.

I have been searching the net trying to find the standard size for motorcycle plates in the European Union. I am really stuck and would appreciate any guidance you might be able to give.

Is there a standard for Europe or for Germany. If there are would you please be able to tell me what the sizes are or direct me to the source for this information.

Many thanks for your help

Hi parrisk,

in the Eu there is no standard size for motorcycle plates. Every country has a different size and color. In Germany the size can be different in some areas, but the maximum is 340mm in length and 200mm in height. Normally the plates are smaller, mine for example is 200x200mm, but smaller than this is very difficult to get.
I hope that this helped you a bit.

Philippe

Hello Parrisk,

i think this link would help you:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plate

as phil_w wrote it depends of the country, the region and even the engine (125ccm --> smaller plate for example...) and a few other different things.... (listed in link...)

@parrisk:

there is no standard-size.
it depends on state of country, region etc...
there is only a maximum-size.

for example:

the shortest possible is "D-D 1" for City Duesseldorf oder "B-B 1" for Berlin - in other regions and/or cities it could be for example "SHG-GH 1111" which is the biggest possible size (Region: Stadthagen/Germany) ... My Sign is for example H-XX XX (X is a mark for a number or a letter, i will not publish my sign ;) ) I Live in City of Hannover and there is no shorter possibility at the moment. In Region of Hannover (not the City...) shorter Signs are possible.

It still depends on your luck, whether you can get a shorter.

But there are more things which increase or decrease your sign: do you want a "saisonal sign" (which is valid for example from april to november)? if yes, your sign has a mark of these months. (04/11) on the right side. if you have still space on your sign your lucky, otherwise you get a bigger sign.

but as written above: the maximum size is regulated.

if you still have any questions: ask!

(the above written text is for germany: other european countries have other signs. the netherlands for example have really small signs...)

i forgot:

other european countries have still sometimes other colours:

netherlands, france and uk have yellow signs. denmark has white signs with red letters. other countries i do not know at the moment.

germany normally has white signs with black letters. all other letter-colours are special signs. red letters for example are special insurance signs for "test-drives" which only dealer own.

if you want to see some possible signs, type at g**gle "kennzeichen deutschland motorrad"

By law, motorcycle plates in germany aren't allowed to be larger than 280x200 mm (width/height). Most drivers get a 250x200 or 220x200 one. Some lucky ones 200x200. Very lucky ones even 180x200. It's depenending on the area where you live, the mood of the clerk, current policy (changes often) and sometimes outright money (Bochum 250x200, unless you pay 30eu extra, then 220x200).

In Germany, 125cc motorcycles capable of less than 80 km/h, pre-1958 motorcycles, and US-imports (via appreciative clerks) get US-size plates, 255x130 mm. I believe that motorcycles in France and Netherlands have these sizes as well.

You might want to have a look at http://motorrad.wikia.com/wiki/Kennzeichen with your favorite online translator ;)

@blahwas:

thank you for your additions! ;)

and: i forgot to wrote that sometimes letters are smaller, if you have for example a three-letter city/region-mark ("shg" stadthagen f.e.).
