The TT Circuit Assen have announced plans to shorten the legendary circuit in order to ‘stay in line with international desires and trends in car and motorcycle racing’. Circuit officials have confirmed that work will start on the modifications in September 2005, meaning the track will maintain its current layout for next season’s MotoGP race.
Assen, which has been the longest racetrack on the MotoGP calendar for several years, will be reduced in length from 6.027 to 4.750 km, with the main shortening taking place at the Northen Loop section. It means that the MotoGP race in 2006 will be held over 24 laps instead of 19.
A statement from the TT Circuit Assen, who have already invested over 35 million euros in upgrades during the last six years, said: “A shorter circuit means more laps for the drivers, more exciting races, more intense involvement of the public and therefore, a greater attraction.
Away from the track, the modifications will also generate room for 7,000 car-parking places, entrance plaza and an amusement park, which will feature a motor café with adjacent bowling centre, dance hall, flight simulator, go-kart track, motorcycle museum, fitness centre and fast food outlets.
