The following is an open letter from Ricky Carmichael:

I am writing to try to hopefully clear up some of the questions and speculation regarding the Motocross des Nations. I have learned that the best way to do this is by writing an open letter to the fans.

At the beginning of the Outdoor National Series there was talk of the US sending a Dream Team to represent our country at the Motocross des Nations. The team is normally selected by inviting the best riders in the 250 and 125 classes. Last year the format was a little strange because there was no 125 class but the promoters decided to return to the original format for 2004. I was fortunate to be on a very short list of riders to be selected with Kevin Windham and James Stewart. Kevin is coming off of a hard fought second over all in the SX season to Chad Reed on top of a great summer last year with a solid second over all in the outdoor national series. Bubba is totally dominating his class and is a threat to anyone on any track.

The selection and the participation of Team USA for the Motocross des Nations has always been a tough proposition for everyone and it isn’t getting any easier. The race is held on the other side of the world at a very difficult time for riders based on the AMA circuit, especially since everyone is just coming off of a 28-race season that is almost twice as long as the season is in Europe. Obviously I wasn’t able to compete in the SX season this year but the other selected riders will have just completed a very long season.

I have always been proud to step up and ride for my country when asked. In fact, I believe six years in a row matches the record for Team USA appearances, if we had actually gone all six times. But I have raced four times – in England, Brazil, France and Belgium — and been fortunate enough to be on one winning team. (We didn’t go in 2001 after the terrorist attacks, and the 2002 race in California was canceled at the last minute.

This year, the decision of whether to go or not has been made particularly difficult for me. As many of you know, I am switching teams for 2005, going from the CRF450R Honda factory bike I have raced all summer long, to a Suzuki RM250, so I will be in sort of a limbo in September: With the last national being held at Glen Helen on September 12 and the MXDN just three weeks later, there is little time to make the transition from one brand to the other, to do adequate testing, and then to have the bike shipped from California across the ocean to Holland in time for the race. This would actually give me less than 2 weeks on a bike that I have never ridden.

My success in Motocross is based upon a very solid training and testing schedule. I do not feel like I would be at my best with less than three weeks of testing with my new team. I have committed 100% of my focus and dedication to team Honda in our quest for this outdoor National Championship and don’t feel that it would be fair to anyone to give less than my all.

My future team manager Roger DeCoster, who is probably the biggest fan of the MXDN, as well as the Team USA manager, believes that it would be virtually impossible for me to be ready for the race on a Suzuki. Besides, I’m not sure when I will even be released from my current Honda contract. For what it’s worth, I have never even ridden a Suzuki. When I signed my contract in the spring, I was injured.

What it all comes to is this: I feel that I need to make a decision now before the final selection is made and the invitations are prepared so that other people—fans, riders and supporters—will know that Team USA is sending the best and most prepared team possible. But looking down the road two months, I’m not sure where I’m even going to be as far as my transition from one team to another goes. So before everyone commits to the event and spends a bunch of money on plane tickets, vacations, team personnel or whatever, only to find out that I can’t pull it off, well, I just think it’s better to say now that I will not be able to compete in the race this time around and will open my spot on the team to a better prepared rider.

I hope that in the future that I will be able to race for Team USA again, and that I will be joined by the very best American riders out there. I know that the Motocross des Nations hold a special place in the hearts of many fans, including my own, and I am optimistic that a team that represents American motocross at its finest will come together very soon. Thanks for your continued support as I finish this outdoor season and as I begin my career at Suzuki and prepare to regain my Supercross title.

MXDN News !!!

Travis (RacerX):

Travis: Send me to the des Nations!

The following is a letter that Travis Pastrana sent to DC and EJ, and we thought we’d share it with our Racer X Online readers.

Eric,

As far as the MXDN goes, I fully realize that I haven't done anything as of late to inspire a lot of confidence in anyone that I can finish a race, let alone win one. I'm not sure if the U.S. already has a team picked, or if we are even going, but I truly believe I would be an asset to the team. I can ride sand till the cows come home, and I can do it well. I only lost one moto in my life at Southwick and it was a second place after a tangle up in the first turn ... and it was to Mike Brown, who I hear would also give his right arm for a shot at the des Nations.

There are four Americans that can beat Stefan Everts, and three have already said no. I want a shot at Everts, and now that I am healthy and already training for next season ... I truly believe that I have a shot. I talked to Roger [DeCoster] a little, and he didn't feel it would be right for me to go over without enough testing on the ‘04 race spec bikes. Well, I will clear my schedule, and as I see it, two months of testing should be plenty.

As far as not sending a team, that's ridiculous. People don't think we can win without our heavy hitters, but have you never seen an underdog team that wants to win with every fiber of their body, go against the best in the world? My money's on the underdog. Whoever they end up selecting for the des Nations (if they even do) will give everything they have for a team that they will no doubt believe in. Look at the last year we won - a reckless sixteen-year-old and a rider who had to go to Europe to find a ride and had a bad year anyway, made up 2/3rds of the team. Ryno kicked everyone’s ass that year - people that kicked his all year long, he blew out of the water. I think he was still nursing an injury and was out of shape as could be, but he wanted to win so badly he pulled our team to victory.

I want to be like Ryno. Let me know if you hear anything.

Travis

Bubba und K-Dub:

On Sunday at the track, we walked in on Steve Whitelock as he was doing payroll for the AMA employees, and he gave us our weekly MXdN update as he signed checks and sealed envelopes. “We have a plan and I’ve had my chit-chat with Ricky Carmichael this morning, and we have basically decided what we’re going to do, and I’ve confirmed it,” Whitelock said. “Roger’s going to act as our team manager, because he fits that role really well. All we need now is the final acceptance by the other two riders, and I think we’re going to the Motocross des Nations. I don’t want to tell you who they are until I get a yes, because whoever I ask to go, I don't want them to believe they’re a B choice. I want anybody that goes to think that they’re our choice and they’re our choice for good reason. But I can tell you that it won’t be Bubba (Stewart) and it won’t be Kevin (Windham). That was our dream team that we really wanted to send, but unfortunately there are issues, and we weren’t able to arrive at a dream team. I’m quite confident that within the next week, we’ll announce our team, and we’ll be going.”

Whitelock says the only thing that may stop the U.S. team from attending at this point is the possibility of terrorist attacks between now and then. “The thing that I don’t want to have happen, and I’m afraid it might happen, is that there’s going to be some terrorist action, and not necessarily the riders, but usually their families or something will be concerned about travel to a foreign country, and I hope that doesn’t happen,” he said. “It’s happened before, with 9/11, so it’s a concern. For me, I’ve traveled so much all over the world that I don’t see it, but I can understand when a family says, ‘We’d really prefer you not go.’ I can accept that. I just pray that there is not action by terrorists at the Olympics, or anytime.”

Zweiter 04
Sieger bei der Tunesienrallye: 98, 99
Sieger bei der Ägyptenrallye: 02
Sieger bei der Marokkorallye: 97, 98, 01, 02
Sieger beim Rallye Weltcup: 02
